Beginning next month, Bhau Daji Lad Museum will go a step ahead in its tradition of treating visitors to more than just art and artifacts. The museum has previously showcased work by various artists in a year-long programme called “Video Art”, and more recently screened history movies based on historic and famous works of art. The city’s oldest museum now launches a new film programme, called “Movies at the Museum”, on April 3.
The programme, jointly curated by cinematographer Avijit Mukul Kishore and architect and urban designer Rohan Shivkumar, will be dedicated to screening movies from various genres — documentary, fiction, animation and visual art — every month. The museum also plans to invite film, art and academic practitioners to discuss their work in interactive sessions after the screenings.
The first edition of the year-long event will kick off, fittingly, with the screening of a short documentary, DG Phalke:The First Indian Film, directed by Satish Bahadur on Dadasaheb Phalke. This will be followed by a showing of Rangbhoomi, the part-fiction, part-documentary work on Phalke by National Award-winning screenwriter Kamal Swaroop, who will also be present for the screening.
