England v India, World Cup 1983, Manchester
The first and only time India faced the host in the semi-final of the World Cup was back in 1983, when they stunned England by six wickets to make the final. India had bowled out England for 213 in the allotted 60 overs. For England, after the opening stand of 69 between Graeme Fowler and Chris Tavare, there were regular fall of wickets. For India, skipper Kapil Dev (3-35), Roger Binny (2-43) and Mohinder Amarnath (2-27) were the key wicket-takers. In their chase India had reached 50-2 when Amarnath (46) and Yashpal Sharma (61) featured in a 92-run third wicket stand to put the visitors on course. In the end, India won with six wickets to spare in 54.4 overs. Sandeep Patil, current chairman of selectors, remained unbeaten on a 32-ball 51 and also hit the winning runs. Amarnath’s all-round effort got him the player of the match award.

This was a repeat of the 1983 clash, only this time the roles were reversed. England batted first and posted 254-6 in 50 overs. Man of the match Graham Gooch (115) set the tone by sweeping India’s left-arm spinners Maninder Singh and Ravi Shastri all over the Wankhede Stadium. England captain Mike Gatting (56) joined in as he added 117 runs with Gooch. India’s chase started in tragic fashion as Sunil Gavaskar was bowled out for just four in his final international appearance. Thereafter, India’s chase progressed well till they reached 204-5, then there was a massive collapse losing five wickets for 15 runs. India’s skipper Kapil Dev was criticised for his irresponsible shot and had to pay for it with his job.
