Rajasthan Assembly adjourns after Congress’ protest over power tariff, farmers compensation
Rajasthan Assembly was on Wednesday adjourned amidst uproarious scenes as opposition Congress protested against the state government over its demands for rolling back power tariff and compensation of farmers whose crops were damaged in unseasonal rains in the state recently.
As soon as the House assembled for Question hour, Congress MLAs led by Leader of Opposition Rameshwar Dudi started waving placards and shouted anti-government slogans, “Kisano ki hatyari sarkar… kisanon ko muvaja de na sake vo sarkar nikkami hai (The government which has acted against the interest of farmers and cannot give compensation to them is ineffective).”
This was strongly objected to by the Treasury members. Parliamentary Affairs Minister R S Rathore and Home Minister G C Kataria asked the Congress members why they did not take part in the debate on power issue on Tuesday.
“Yesterday, the whole day was meant for the debate on the power and farmers’ issues, and then Congress did not think of farmers which was most unfortunate. Why they are shedding crocodile tears now,” Kataria said.
“BJP government had already released funds for compensation to affected farmers through collectors and it is being distributed,” Kataria added.
While Rathore requested the Speaker to begin with the first question, the Speaker asked BJP MLA Heeralal Niwai to put up the question, but the Congress and ruling BJP members indulged in allegations and counter-allegations leading to pandemonium for about eight minutes.
The ruling-BJP members blamed the previous Congress government for not safeguarding interests of farmers, while Congress blamed Raje government for escalating power tariff and non-payment of compensation to farmers after recent rains.
Upset over the chaos, the Speaker adjourned the House, saying, “I am annoyed with the behaviour of Opposition Congress members… Thus, the House is adjourned for the day.”
The Speaker then corrected himself and said the House is adjourned till April 6, after realising that the House is on recess on April 2, April 3 and on April 4 and 5 is the weekend.
