CBI to get hi-tech centre to probe complex crimes
Setting up an International Centre of Excellence in Investigation (ICEI), a centralised technology vertical and a state-of-the-art forensic laboratory were among a slew of measures announced by CBI Director Anil Sinha on Monday aimed at modernisation and capacity-building within the agency.
CBI investigations into complex financial crimes like 2G scam, coal scam, ponzi schemes and capital market schemes pose multiple challenges, especially concerning money trail and recovery of proceeds of crime across multiple jurisdictions, the director said. He was speaking at the CBI Day awards ceremony for officers at the agency’s headquarters in New Delhi.
“Invariably, these investigations require in-house cutting edge technology tools and certified professionals, which are presently lacking. In order to overcome these challenges, a proposal has been sent to the government to establish a centralised technology vertical within the CBI to provide real-time support to investigations,” the CBI chief said.

“Modernisation and capacity-building cannot be a one-time venture. So, to institutionalise latest skills and knowledge into our investigation and prosecution work on a long-term basis, we have proposed to the government to set up an International Centre of Excellence in Investigation to be located at the CBI Academy campus in Ghaziabad,” Sinha said.
