D-I-Y Cinema: In a first-of-its-kind experiment, Anand Gandhi is inviting people to make their own Ship of Theseus
In a first-of-its-kind experiment, Anand Gandhi is inviting people to make their own Ship of Theseus .
In a Brave experiment, Anand Gandhi has released raw footage of his debut film, Ship of Theseus. About 34 hours of the movie’s unedited footage and soundtrack are now available on the open source platform, pad.ma, as part of the director’s vision to make cinema freely accessible to everyone.
“The film was an experiment in many ways. Now we want to take this experiment forward and invite people to make their own Ship of Theseus,” said Gandhi when he dropped in for a quick chat at Express Towers on Saturday. The film by Gandhi’s production house Recyclewala Films, becomes the first in the world to go public with its rushes.
Gandhi showed how one can pick and choose from the hours of footage that is categorised by scenes, characters and locations. “With the original film available for reference, one can play with the footage, change the storyline or make an entirely new movie altogether. We’re trying to create an online encyclopedia for cinema. With that in place, the possibilities are endless,” said Gandhi who was inspired to open source his film after watching Hungarian filmmaker Gyorgy Palfi’s Final Cut – Ladies and Gentlemen, a montage film of more than 450 classics of world cinema.
SoT’s footage has already found takers. One filmmaking student has uploaded her version of the film, Gandhi shared. “This sort of public collaboration has the potential to change the way we experience cinema. For instance, students of cinema can learn how we made the film and it also gives us a chance to relive the experience.”
