The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday attacked the NDA government on its economic policies and its “attempts to communally polarize society”.
Speaking at the party’s 21st Congress in Visakhapatnam, CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat lashed out at the Centre’s pro-rich policies and accused it of pursuing neo-liberal policies to benefit big business.

“NDA govt’s use of ordinances, intolerance towards secular intelligentsia are portents of an authoritarian regime,” said Karat.
He also charged the BJP with launching a vicious campaign against minorities and violating their cultural rights like banning of beef.

CPM politburo members and leaders of other Left parties have arrived for the six-day party congress to pick a successor to Karat. It is going to be a close contest between Sitaram Yechury and S Ramachandran Pillai for the post of general secretary. The party is divided on choosing a younger face against experience.
