FIR against Assam artist for offensive painting of Krishna
A little-known artist in Assam has invited the wrath of some Hindu organisations which have lodged complaints with the police accusing him of depicting lord Krishna in an offensive manner in one of his paintings exhibited at the State Art Gallery here last week.
“Yes, we have registered a case on the basis of an FIR lodged by the Hindu Jagaran Mancha on Friday in which the organisation has complained that the artist, one Akram Hussain, had depicted Krishna in an offensive manner,” Guwahati Police DCP Amitabh Sinha said.
The Hindu Jagaran Mancha has alleged that Hussain’s painting portrayed Krishna in an objectionable way . His another painting of Shiva was also allegedly distasteful.
“The artist has, however, immediately removed the painting and has apologised,” DCP Sinha said. The police were now looking for Hussain, who reportedly hails from Goalpara. The state cultural directorate has instituted an inquiry to find out how such a painting was permitted in the State Art Gallery.
