A month after mob lynched jail inmate, Dimapur gets Police Commissionerate

Nagaland’s most important commercial hub and only railhead has become the second city – after Guwahati – in the Northeast to introduce a Police Commissionerate. Chief Minister TR Zeliang, who inaugurated it on Wednesday, said the upgradation would help bring down crime rate in the city.

Dimapur alone accounts for more than 40 per cent of crimes registered in Nagaland. Only last month, an irate mob broke into the central jail here, pulled out a rape-accused undertrial prisoner, dragged him through the city to finally lynch and hang him.

According to IGP (Range) Wabang Jamir, Dimapur alone had registered 532 of the state’s total of 1210 crimes during 2014, which was about 44 per cent of Nagaland’s total registered crimes. In 2013 Dimapur’s share stood at a little over 42 per cent of the state’s total crimes.

Also a hub of criminal gangs and militant groups, Dimapur’s business community remains under constant pressure of extortions and illegal taxes, in the process leading to abductions for ransom, as well as killings. With upgradation to Commissionerate the strength of police in Dimapur will now go up from 869 to 1425, Jamir said.

Inaugurating the Dimapur Police Commissionerate, chief minister Zeliang said since Nagaland had one of the best police personnel to population ratio (1:7) in the country, it was now for the state police force to improve its effectiveness and efficiency by adopting latest technology to both prevent as well as detect crimes.
