Five car thieves arrested, 15 vehicles recovered

Police arrested five persons on Tuesday, who, they said, were behind a spate of car thefts. Fifteen stolen cars were recovered following the arrests, police said.

The accused were identified as Nawab Warsi alias Guddu Warsi (47), Deepak Ghildiyal (29), Ashutosh Bhandari (22), Majid Khan (42) and Irfan (32).

“Warsi, who was the kingpin of the gang, has more than 18 cases against him in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. He was also previously involved in a murder case in Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, in which he allegedly burnt four men alive in a car in 2010. He allegedly killed them after suspecting them to be police informers. Ghildiyal was running a company called ‘Mayna Auto’ in Uttarakhand. After suffering losses, he joined hands with Warsi,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Prem Nath said.

“After a spate of car thefts in the capital, several teams were deployed at pickets. Acting on a tip-off, a police team flagged down a Tata Safari on Vivekananda Marg in RK Puram,” he said.

The occupants could not produce ownership papers and, on being questioned, police learnt that it was a stolen car and that the engine and chassis numbers had been tampered with.

The vehicle’s occupants were taken to the RK Puram police station for questioning.

“The accused revealed that they would purchase stolen vehicles at cheaper rates and, after changing the engine and chassis numbers, they would dispose off at higher prices,” Nath said.

Based on their information, raids were conducted at several places in Uttarakhand and 15 stolen cars were recovered from different places.
