To save Taj, Rope in international experts: Ashwani Kumar

In a letter to Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar after the team’s return, Ashwani Kumar flagged a number of issues that needed to be corrected.

Expressing shock at the continuing discolouration of the Taj Mahal, the head of a Parliamentary panel has asked the Environment Ministry to seek immediate help of international experts to assist the Archeological Survey of India in carrying out the restoration work at the monument.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology, and Environment and Forests, headed by former law minister Ashwani Kumar recently visited Agra to witness the restoration work at Taj.

In a letter to Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar after the team’s return, Ashwani Kumar flagged a number of issues that needed to be corrected. “The discolouration of Taj… is a visible and verifiable reality… Certain immediate measures for cleaning/restoration work of Taj brooks no delay.

I suggest that a meeting of ASI top brass be convened… and an action plan be finalised… If necessary, international experts could also be consulted,” Kumar wrote in his letter. Stressing on the need to address the issue in a comprehensive manner, Kumar has pointed out that there was no end to the pollution in the Yamuna river, as well as the dust and smoke coming from nearby factories.
