Supporters of Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani waved Pakistani flags as the separatist leader addressed a rally on Friday in Tral where he demanded the Jammu and Kashmir government curtail the period to Amarnath Yatra to a month. He was addressing the rally after meeting the family members of a youth killed during an encounter between Army and militants last month.
In April too, Pakistani flags and anti-India slogans were raised during a separatist rally in Srinagar, which was attended by Geelani and Masarat Alam, who was released from jail only in March. After the incident, Alam was again booked under the Public Safety Act and sent to a Jammu jail.
Taking potshots at the PDP-BJP government in Jammu and Kashmir over the second such incident within a month, NC leader and former CM Omar Abdullah tweeted: “Imagine what @BJP4India would have said if as CM I’d been sitting in Bombay surrounded by movie stars while Pak flags are waved in Kashmir (sic).”

Geelani, who was put under house arrest before a protest march to Tral last month, offered Friday prayers in the south Kashmir town and addressed a gathering. On the issue of Amarnath Yatra, he also asked the state government to hand over the shrine’s management to local Pandits by dissolving the shrine board.
“The pilgrims are our guests and people of Kashmir will always welcome them but it should be regulated like it has been done in Uttrakhand and other places. The duration of Amarnath Yatra should be minimum 15 days or maximum one month,” he said. The yatra will begin from July 2 for a period of 59 days.
“Not a single person in the shrine board is a local Pandit. They all are outsiders and they don’t have any concern with our environment, instead they are pursuing agenda of communal forces like RSS,” the separatist leader added.
