Katrina, Ranbir’s ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani': A tale of open secrets

After much dilly-dallying over his relationship status, Ranbir Kapoor has put an end to all the speculations. In a recent interview to the regional magazine Ananda Bazaar Patrika, the actor has admitted to being in love and feeling committed and responsible.

When year 2015 started, little did anyone know that it would turn out to be a nightmare for the fangirls all over the nation. Shahid Kapoor is all set to get married to Delhi-based Mira Rajput in June and now the news is that even Ranbir Kapoor is all raring to venture into the marriage space with his longtime girlfriend Katrina Kaif.

After much dilly-dallying over his relationship status, Ranbir Kapoor has put an end to all the speculations. In a recent interview to the regional magazine Ananda Bazaar Patrika, the actor has admitted to being in love and feeling committed and responsible. He has further said, “This year both of us are extremely busy, so there won’t be any time for the marriage. We have planned to tie the knot by the end of next year. Both of us have agreed on that.”

Not only does this come as a shocker for the fans, but also for the media, for theirs has always been something that we call “a rumoured relationship”. It’s a state when everybody knows the secret, but since it’s not heard from the horses’ mouth, you respect the forced secrecy. Forced, because until now it was only Ranbir’s father and veteran actor Rishi Kapoor giving hints in his interviews that his son was indeed living-in with his girlfriend. The girlfriend, we assumed, was Katrina.

Ranbir’s cousin Kareena Kapoor also had a role to play in letting the secrets out as she said she preffered ‘sister-in-law’ Katrina to any other contemporary actress on Karan Johar’s chat show ‘Koffee With Karan’.

Katrina Kaif, a British National of Indian origin, started her Bollywood career with the movie ‘Boom’ and true to the name, the movie “boom”ed, or “bomb”ed, at the Box Office. Superstar Salman Khan came to the rescue and took the beautiful actress in his stride. There was no looking back for Katrina since then.

With movies like ‘Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya’, ‘Namaste London’ and ‘New York’, Katrina carved a niche for herself in the Bollywood. Another milestone came in her life by the name of ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani’; not professional, for the movie was similar to what she had been doing till then. The movie was a personal milestone as she happened to meet Ranbir on the sets for the time.

Fresh from the success of ‘Wake Up Sid’, Ranbir Kapoor found love again in Katrina. A slapstick comedy, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, became a blockbuster mainly due to the chemistry that the lead couple shared.

Ranbir and Katrina again worked in the 2010 movie ‘Raajneeti’ directed by Prakash Jha. By the time the movie ended, there were rumours all around about the cute duo dating each other. And with this began the denying spree and continued till today.

Though linked to almost all his co-stars including Nargis Fakhri and Priyanka Chopra, Ranbir always was found to be driven back to the lovely Katrina.

Rumour even had it the “rumoured” couple had a fallout, but to this Ranbir and Katrina maintained that there was nothing that could lead to a fallout for they were “just friends”. Another definition – “Just Friends” is a state when your much guarded secrect isn’t so anymore, but you still try to guard the privacy.

But the “just friends” tag soon came crashing down when they were spotted holidaying in Ibiza, Spain. The couple was clicked at a beach in Ibiza and the pictures soon went viral. The images showed Katrina in bikini and the duo cozying upto each other. The paparazzi had done it and the open secret was out in more openness.

Being constantly under the scanner for their relationship might have been taking a toll on Katrina and Ranbir. They were, thereby, time and again spotted with each other either at dates or family dinners.

Ranbir’s mother and veteran actress Neetu Kapoor (Singh) was, however, rumoured to be not approving of this relationship. In an interview when she was asked about her son’s marriage, she had said, “See whenever he is ready, we are ready. It’s all up to him…I really have no clue. Because ‘aaj kal ke bachchon ka kuch pata nahi hota’. When they get ready…when they gonna get married…what they want to do. They are absolutely on their own trip so I don’t know.”

It was 2013’s Christmas and the Kapoor family was gearing for the celebrations. So, when asked about the guest list, especially about Katrina being a part of the celebrations, she added, “Whoever he (Ranbir) wants to get along with him, he can…whoever (smiles).”

This shrugging-off-the-matter statement by Neetu Kapoor escalated the gossip that indeed everything wasn’t right between the would-be daughter-in-law of the Kapoor household. Neetu Singh also apparently cropped Katrina out of their family picture taken at a party. This was the time when Ranbir was speculated to be moving in with Katrina and there was news that the Kapoors weren’t happy with this.

Neetu Kapoor again hit news when she posted a picture of Ranbir and Deepika Padukone (read: Ranbir’s ex-girlfriend) from the song ‘Balam Pichkari’ (‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’) on the eve of Holi this year. Neetu Kapoor, while clarifying her motive behind this, said that she just posted the picture because that’s a Holi song in which her son Ranbir has performed and that people should not blow things out of context.

Since then, the speculations regarding the impending marriage of the Kapoor lad had only escalated.

Katrina is also said to be the admin of a Whatsapp group by the name of “The Kapoors” and has added Neetu Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni and mother Suzanne Torquette. The actress was also seen enjoying a cozy dinner with Ranbir, Neetu Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor and Raj Kapoor’s wife and Ranbir’s grandmom Krishna Raj Kapoor.

It was also being said that the Kapoor family was planning to hold a hush-hush ‘roka’ ceremony for the couple by the end of May, since both would be free around then. Ranbir and Katrina, however, were still on the denying spree. While Ranbir refuses to divulge his plans of getting married, Katrina says that the media would certainly know as and when she plans to get married and that she wouldn’t mind if that causes a circus.

But the moment of truth came when Ranbir finally admitted to being in love and feeling committed. A while earlier he had also commented on how he would want to have three children in total.

It looks like since the last time Ranbir’s parents made faux pas at social media and interviews, the couple had decided to gradually and swiftly spill the beans on their relationship. So, when in April, they went for a well deserved holiday to Maldives and were spotted at the airport, they looked at ease and without their usual hiding gears.

Now, when the couple is out and about, all we can do is handover a box of tissues to the fangirls and fanboys. We understand, girls and boys. And of course, let’s wait, and some of us can’t even wait, for the grand Kapoor marriage. It’s going to be extravagant and massive, just like the Kapoors, we’re sure.
