Hour after The Indian Express reported that education departments of some districts of Chhattisgarh have issued circulars to Christian missionaries “banning the use of Father” in their educational institutions, one district has withdrawn the order.
District Education Officer of Mahasamund issued a circular on May 11 to all the 14 missionary schools to “immediately stop the use of Father for the head of the institution” and follow “Pracharya” or “Sir”.
Mahasamund Collector Umesh Agrawal said on Friday, “This order was issued by mistake. As it came to my notice, I have asked education officer to withdraw it immediately.”

On Thursday, Agrawal had defended the order and said: “There were complaints that students are being compelled to address teachers as Father. No one can compel anyone in this way.”
The circular “approved by the Collector” was also copied to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad branch of Mahasamund and the departmental officer in Raipur.
In February, Kanker district administration had issued a similar order which was also copied to VHP offices of the district.
