IPL 8: Kolkata cop loses eye after trip to Eden Gardens

A trip to Eden Garden, to catch the Indian Premier League, has resulted in Kolkata Police constable, Aloke Aich, losing his right eye. The 53-year-old driver for the deputy commissioner of the 5th Battalion of the city police, Debashish Sarkar, was seated in Block G witnessing the Kolkata Knight Riders vs Kings XI Punjab last Sunday.
In the final over of the game, David Miller’s towering six hit Aich’s eye. After getting medical stadium at the stadium, he was moved to the CMRI hospital in Alipore.
On Thursday, doctors informed Aich and his family that he would never be able to see with his injured eye.
Aich is the sole earner in the family. Wife Renuka is a homemaker while son Rana completed graduation in 2010 but isn’t employed. “I don’t know what will happen. With his right eye gone, I don’t think he would be able to sit behind the wheel again. Kolkata Police has been very helpful. They’re bearing all the medical expenses. In fact, they’re the only ones we’ve by our side at the moment. Help hasn’t arrived from any other quarter,” Rana lamented.
He doesn’t know whether or not his father would be retained by Kolkata Police. “Will they keep him in the job or will he be asked to take voluntary retirement? How will we survive if he loses his job? We are a lower middle-class family, dependent solely on his income,” Rana said.
Talking about the incident, the son added they had no idea about the incident until one of his father’s colleagues called him to inform about it.
Their one-story house at Barasat (North 24-Parganas) is locked as both Rana and his mother have moved to a relative’s place in Kolkata for closer access to hospital.
Special additional and joint-commissioner of Kolkata Police, Rajeev Mishra has extended a helping hand to the family.
“It’s very saddening that Aich has lost his right eye. But we are with him and his family in this hour of crisis. He is being treated at CMRI and we are looking after the whole process,” Mishra told The Indian Express.
