Is ‘Bombay Velvet’ a flop already? Twitterati react on Ranbir Kapoor’s movie
It was only after the launch of the first song and few dialogue promos that the movie picked some steam. But by then, the damage had been done.
It’s a mere coincidence that the director who gave Ranbir Kapoor a disaster by the name of ‘Besharam’ in 2013 – Abhinav Kashyap – happens to be Anurag Kashyap’s brother. Anurag has directed Ranbir’s recently released ‘Bombay Velvet’.
The Big-shot movie ‘Bombay Velvet’, who had had hopes pinned on itself of becoming the “Blockbuster of the year”, is looking set to drown, blame it on the content or the hype created around it or so say the reports.

As soon as it was released, the audiences as well as critics didn’t seem too happy with the official trailer of the movie. It was only after the launch of the first song and few dialogue promos that the movie picked some steam. But by then, the damage had been done.
People were expecting a good opening atleast if not the sustenance. But reports now say that the Anushka – Ranbir starrer has just managed to reap in Rs 5.20 cr on day 1, much lower than what was expected.
Film critic Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to express his disappointment with the collections.
#BombayVelvet Fri ₹ 5.20 cr. India biz. D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R.

In comparison, Abhinav Kashyap’s ‘Besharam’ had a fairly descent opening figure.
#Besharam had collected ₹ 21.56 cr on Day 1 [2 Oct – holiday]. #BombayVelvet has collected 1/4th of that film on Day 1 [₹ 5.20 cr]. — taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) May 16, 2015
‘Roy’, which released in February and had Ranbir in a “dynamic” role as the credits said, also was a flop. However, it had managed to earn Rs 10 cr on the day of its release.
This certainly raises many a question. Have the audiences lost faith in Ranbir’s star power? The answer better be no, for nothing can take away from the young superstar what he has done in movies like ‘Wake Up Sid’, ‘Rocket Singh’, ‘Rockstar’ and ‘Barfi’ among others.
‘Piku’, starring Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan in the lead, despite being released on almost half of the screens (1400 in comparison with ‘Bombay Velvet’s 2600) managed to earn Rs 5.32 cr on day one.
People have been taking to Twitter to mention the dismal collections of ‘Bombay Velvet’ and most particularly of Ranbir Kapoor.

Ram Gopal Varma, who has lately become famous for his foot-in-the-mouth statements, also lambasted the movie.
The bottom line is everyone makes an AAG and till he makes his own AAG he will bitch about others AAGS until he too burns in his own AAG — Ram Gopal Varma (@RGVzoomin) May 15, 2015
Karan Johar is the only Velvet and the rest is coarse

‘Piku’ continues to do a descent job at the Box Office marching slowly but steadily to big figures.
#Piku [Week 2] Fri 3.10 cr. Grand total: ₹ 44.52 cr. India biz. FABULOUS! — taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) May 16, 2015
‘Piku’ and ‘Gabbar is Back’ are, thereby, expected to benefit from ‘Bombay Velvet’s poor show at the Box Office, especially ‘Piku’ which is riding high and steady on the good word of mouth.
