Tarun Gogoi completes 4 years, claims ‘major transformation’ in Assam
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi
The Congress government in Assam headed by Tarun Gogoi completed four years in its third consecutive term in office on Sunday with the Chief Minister claiming that it had brought about “major transformation” in different sectors in the past 14 years. With this, Assam also entered its election year with the assembly elections due latest by April 2016.
“The state government has initiated a slew of development schemes and programmes for ensuring all-round development of the state and the welfare of its citizens. Since the day one of assumption of power in 2001, our government has been fine-tuning the administration to make it people-oriented,” Gogoi said on Sunday.

He said that while added thrust was given on augmenting production and in raising the income of all sections of society, there has been significant transformation in infrastructure development, agriculture and allied sectors, education, strengthening surface communication, sports, culture, information technology, power, industries, trade and commerce. “The present government took over the reins of power at a most crucial juncture but catapulted the state towards the growth trajectory despite facing various challenges,” he said, pointing at the severe financial crisis and serious law and order problem that Assam faced in 2001.
Gogoi, however, hit out at the BJP government at the Centre and said that though Assam had made remarkable strides in the past 14 years, the present Union government had started depriving the state by slashing fund allocation of several centrally-funded schemes.
