Visuals from two cities north Indian cities made the headlines today, in what appears to be the common man, or should we say woman, standing up for what is right.
In the first video, a woman in Agra smashed the windscreen of a Samajwadi Party leader’s Mercedes after his bodyguard allegedly teased her. As per reports, the 23-year-old woman was waiting at a crossing when the SP leader’s cavalcade stopped alongside and the gunner accompanying him allegedly winked at her from inside the car.
As she was taking a photo of the gunner with her mobile, some of the guards in the cavalcade came running and allegedly broke her mobile phone.
This infuriated the woman and she climbed on the bonnet of the car, uprooted the party flag fixed on the bonnet and used it to break the windshield.
The another incident involved Union minister Ramkripal Yadav. The former RJD leader was prevented by a woman CISF official from entering Patna’s Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport through its exit gate.
The lady official stopped the minister outside and talked to her superior over the walkie-talkie. Yadav, Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Drinking Water, later said, “I was in a hurry and made a mistake, trying to enter from the exit gate. But when the lady official asked me to take another gate, I obeyed and entered through the entry gate.”
Though the minister conceded that he made a mistake by trying to flout rules, the incident has once again brought to the fore a sense of entitlement that our netas boast of in public places. This brazen display of power and arrogance have been treated with disdain and disgust, it is still very much in vogue for a section of our political class.
