‘You are the apple of my eye': Osama bin Laden’s son’s letter to wife

Among a cache of documents retrieved during a US raid on the dreaded terrorist Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan is a love letter that Osama’s son Sa’ad wrote to his wife. The letter is one among a range of files that were de-classified and released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence of the US government on Wednesday.

The letter, transcribed into English, provides a fresh insight into the personal life of Sa’ad, a man who was once groomed to be a successor of Osama after the leader’s death. However, it was widely reported that Sa’ad was killed in a US drone strike in 2009.

Sa’ad starts off the letter by inquiring about the health of his wife, whom he calls ‘dear’ and ‘faithful’, and then going on to inquire about his sons, daughters, brothers and sisters. He then lovingly reminisces the ‘beautiful’ memories he had with his wife adding that he would never marry after her simply because he cannot find a woman like her.

“Know that you do fill my heart with love, beautiful memories, and your long-suffering of tense situations in order to appease me and be kind to me, and every time I thought of you my eyes would tear for being away from you. I want you to know that I will not marry on you because I will not find a woman like you,” he writes.

Sa’ad also tells her, through the letter, that she had been a good wife in this life and that he would want her to be his wife ‘in the thereafter’ as well. He adds that it is his will that she may return to her family if he dies, but make sure to look after his children.

“As for you, you are the apple of my eye, and the most precious thing that I have in this world. If you want to marry after me, I have no objection, but I really want for you to be my wife in paradise, and the woman, if she marries two men, is given a choice on Judgment Day to be with one of them,” he writes in the letter dated August 15, 2008.
