‘Bombay Velvet’ an ‘epic disaster'; Anurag Kashyap and Ranbir Kapoor bear the brunt

The movie, which was made on a whopping budget of Rs 84 Cr, excluding the post production charges, is now being labelled as an ‘epic disaster’ due to the dismal performance at the Box Office. It has managed to earn a mere Rs 22.27 Cr after a week of its release.
Ranbir Kapoor‘s last solo release ‘Besharam’, which was directed by Anurag Kashyap’s brother Abhinav Kashyap, had earned Rs 21.56 Cr on day one – slightly more than the seven day collection of ‘Bombay Velvet’.

Film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted to bring in the comparison:

The fate of the movie leaves, most particularly, Ranbir Kapoor bearing the brunt and in a perverse situation. The actor, who was taking big leaps to super stardom with movies like ‘Wake Up Sid’, ‘Rocket Singh’, ‘Rockstar’ and ‘Barfi’, suffered disappointment in the guise of ‘Besharam’ and ‘Roy’. Ranbir has been panned for his choices, since then.

‘Bombay Velvet’ was still considered to be a good choice, but the movie has tanked below and beyond expectations. Now, questions are being raised over his star quality and acting ability. And it’ll surely be interesting to see which movie would be able to do for him, what ‘Haider’ did for Shahid Kapoor. Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Tamasha’ and Anurag Basu’s ‘Jagga Jasoos’ can prove to be safe bets, but then even ‘Bombay Velvet’ was.
Anushka Sharma, who was having a gala time at the Box Office with ‘PK’ and her first production ‘NH10′, also would be having a difficult time dealing with the failure of ‘Bombay Velvet’. Critics have slammed her choice and acting in the movie.
But unlike Ranbir, Anushka has had a good start to the year with ‘NH10′ and Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’, slated to release on June 15, might as well come to her rescue.

More than the actors, perhaps, director Anurag Kashyap is the one who happens to have lost the most with this movie. His repertoire as an out-of-the-box filmmaker was brought to test with this out-and-out commercial movie and he seems to have failed at it. While his earlier releases like ‘Dev D’ and ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’ and him backing the then “small budget” ‘Queen’, which later went on to wonders, earned him the title of filmmaker with a difference, the debacle of ‘Bombay Velvet’ seems to have stolen all of it.
People, of all tastes, are taking to Twitter and Facebook to condemn Kashyap and his film-making sensibilities. His mentor Ram Gopal Varma even called him arrogant when he stood by his movie and defended it on Facebook.
And like Ranbir, he also doesn’t seem to have movies immediately in line, which lessens his chances to bounce back.
The only person, who seems to have benefitted from the movie, is filmmaker Karan Johar. He played the antagonist Kaizaad Khambatta and garnered praises for the portrayal of the negative shades with ease.
With ‘Piku’ still doing well at the Box Office, and ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ opening to exceptionally good reviews, women power is here to rule. That still leaves hopes for Anushka, but Kashyap and Ranbir? We wonder.
