Not one, not two, but four spin-off projects are under progress for ‘Game of Thrones’!
As the Game of Thrones begins wrapping up the series with eight seasons, HBO plans to take a leaf out of Disney’s Marvel and Star Wars story by making four different spin-offs to their mega hit show.
According to a report in Entertainment Weekly, HBO has roped in Max Borenstein of Kong: Skull Island; Brian Helgeland of A Knight’s Tale; Jane Goldman of Kingsman: The Secret Service; and Carly Wray of Mad Men for developing ideas that will potentially expand the Westeros universe. George RR Martin is also involved with the stories being developed by Goldman and Wray.
Creating a content universe has become ‘the trend’ of the hour with Disney’s MCU and Star Wars, Warner Bros DC Universe, James Cameron and his Avatar sequels among others. If the projects are greenlit, this will be the first time a TV series will be blown into a full-fledged franchise. If a successful tentpole comes out of the stories under development to replace the current series, this could mean more business in the form of subscriptions, worldwide licensing, merchandise business and a lot of Emmys and other awards.
