From today, five SC benches to go paperless
In a bid to make the Supreme Court paperless, the apex court has made all preparations to implement an ambitious project.
The SC will go partially paperless when it opens on Monday after summer vacation. All fresh matters listed in the top five senior most courts will be digitally filed in court. This initiative is part of the massive drive to digitise courts.
The new integrated system — which was originally supposed to be in place by May 1, was going to be fully functional once the top court resumed work on Monday. However, government sources revealed that completely digitising the courts is a long process that will take time.
The integrated software management system inaugurated by the Chief Justice of India, JS Khehar, on May 10 is a process, and paperless courts is the end result, an official associated with the initiative said. “There are crores of case files that need to be scanned and uploaded. We are aiming to scan at least one lakh papers a day. We are, however, falling short of that target. We are currently averaging around 60,000-80,000 papers a day,” said the source.
