Clogged drains: House panel seeks action against officials
A Delhi Assembly panel asked the AAP government on Monday to take action against officials responsible for clogged drains — a perennial problem that leads to massive waterlogging and disrupts traffic during rains.
The Committee on Petitions, which considers petitions presented to the House or the Speaker, on Friday had recommended an inquiry against the Public Works Department (PWD) and its top officials after it found that they had lied about the amount of work completed for cleaning drains ahead of the monsoon.
AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj is the chairperson of the 9-member panel. Presenting the committee’s report to the House, Bhardwaj said the status reports of the PWD and the municipal corporations on the amount of de-silting done was “false.”
“The officials in charge of de-silting drains and prevention of water-logging in Delhi have miserably failed in discharging their duties,” said Delhi Speaker Ram Niwas Goel. In Delhi Assembly, there are some 20-odd panels on various issues. They all report to the Speaker.
