Congress leader fined Rs 1 lakh, ostracised by village panchayat for issuing triple talaq without valid reason
A village panchayat in Dadri fined a Congress leader Rs 1 lakh for issuing triple talaq to his wife after 30 years of marriage. The case appears to be the first after the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) issued new guidelines, stating that triple talaq could not be issued without a valid reason.
The Congress leader Meherban Malik, a resident of Nai Basti, Dadri had picked up a fight with his wife and mother-in-law a few days ago. The local Congress leader got so annoyed after the verbal dual that he issued triple talaq on his wife.
Meherban had got married with Shameena (name changed) 30 years ago and has a son and two daughters. The wife raised the matter with the village panchayat following which Meherban was counselled and asked to live with his wife.
However, Meherban continued to demand that he get a divorce and allegedly even picked up a fight with Panchayat members when they drafted an agreement for the compromise and withdrawal of triple talaq.
