Woman at 102 oldest hip fracture survivor at AIIMS
At 102, Khazani Devi has become the oldest patient at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to have recovered, almost miraculously, from a hip fracture. Not only that, the strong-willed woman has even started moving slowly in the corridors of the country’s premier medical institute.
After slipping on a bathing mat at her home recently, the Gurugram resident was immediately rushed to AIIMS. With no such medical history, this was the first time that she had suffered an injury.
“She is the oldest patient we have treated, so far. Before this, we had treated a 100-year- old person. As soon as she came to the hospital, we started her operation. Now, she is walking safely in our ward,” Dr Rajesh Malhotra, Professor of Orthopaedics and Chief of the Trauma Centre, AIIMS, said.
Hip fractures and damage to spine and forearms are some of the most common injuries associated with falls. Among the elderly, who have weaker structural muscles, poor balance, reflexes, vision, and attenuated bones, a slip can often lead to much more dangerous injuries.
