China: 9-day-old infant saves a life by donating her kidney
Organ donation is more important than many of us realise—for society and for the individuals it directly affects. Organ donation saved the life of an 8-month-old baby’s life was saved after a kidney transplant on July 26 in Southwest China.
A 9-days-old infant, who died of brain failure in July, donated her kidney to the 8- month-old baby. She became the youngest ever organ donor in Kunming, the Capital of Yunnan Province, Southwest China, reports cgtn.com
A woman surnamed Zuo, underwent an emergent caesarean operation and gave birth in Kunming’s Maternal and Child Health Hospital. The infant weighed over 2.5kgs and was born with severe asphyxia. Despite the continuous efforts to save her life, she remained in a coma for four days. On the seventh day, the infant was diagnosed with complete loss of brain function and later died.
The infant’s family, in spite of the grave loss legally agreed to grant the donation. “She is my child, even if she has only been in the world for a very short time,” said Zuo’s husband. “I hope her organ can save other’s life. We would be glad to see that,” he added.
