Over 45K idols immersed on Day 1 of Ganpati visarjan
Saturday saw the first big immersion day after devotees took Lord Ganesha’s idols to immersion points calling out that he come back sooner next year.
As per figures provided by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the number of immersions for one and half day was less as compared to the previous year when compared with figures until 6 pm. However, until 11 pm, 122 Sarvajanik (public) Ganpatis were immersed, and 45,926 household Ganpatis. Of these immersions in artificial lakes, 50 were Sarvajanik Ganpatis, and 9,302 were household Ganpatis.
The reasons for this drop are said to be varied —there were lesser number of Ganpatis brought home, or people have extended the number of days for which they keep Ganpatis or they moved out late considering the relaxation of norms this year.
While figures until 11 pm were not available for comparison, this year until 6 pm, there were 10 immersions of Sarvajanik Ganpatis and 2,035 of household Ganpatis. Of these, 238 Ganpati idols were immerses in artificial ponds, and three of these immersions were of public Ganpatis while the rest were private. The artificial pond this year was moved from the Mayor’s bungalow to a recreation spot near it totaling 32 of them.
