Centre plans to bring legislation in Winter Session of Parliament to end Triple Talaq
The Modi government is looking to bring a legislation to formally outlaw the practice of Triple Talaq in the Muslim society. In August this year, Supreme Court’s constitutional bench in a split judgment ruled that talaq-e-biddat or instant Triple Talaq is illegal.
Now Centre is taking steps to completely get rid of the practise. Committee of ministers have been constituted to frame a law to ban triple talaq. It will finalise the draft bill in coming days, which will be then up for voting and discussion. There is virtually unanimous support to ban Triple Talaq, so the government is likely to have it easy to pass the law.
Despite SC’s ban, cases of Triple Talaq have been reported from parts of the country. A woman hailing from Hyderabad has claimed she was given triple talaq over phone, despite the Supreme Court’s ban over it.
Athiya Begum said that a month after their wedding, her husband Sheikh Sardar Mazhar went out of the house. Within few hours, he called and gave her ‘triple talaq’ over phone on November 13.
