Manmohan Singh jibes at PM Modi, praises GDP uptick
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh “invoked the memories of more than 100 people who lost their lives” while standing in queues as a result of demonetization, and took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a host of issues.
“I don’t want the country to take pity on the basis of my humble background. I do not think I would like to enter into any competition with Prime Minister Modiji on this,” he said on why he does not talk about his background.
He also said nothing is gained as “often attempted by Modiji” to pit two great leaders Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel against each other.
Addressing professionals and business people in poll-bound Gujarat’s Surat on Saturday, the senior Congress leader said, “I say with immense pain and a sense of deep responsibility that the 8th of November (the day the government announced demonetization) was a black day for our economy and democracy.”
He also said that it was too early to conclude that the economic slowdown has reversed as the 6.3 per cent growth rate in the July-September quarter “did not take into account small- and medium-sector enterprises”.
