Gujarat Elections 2017: Centre flays Pak reaction on PM Modi charge on Cong
The Central government reacted sharply to a statement from Pakistan on Monday that Islamabad should not be dragged into electoral politics of India, and said such remarks should be condemned.
Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that a statement from the Pakistan foreign office spokesman at this juncture amounted to “bailing out the Congress”. “We condemn the unwarranted statement from Pakistan,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan urged Indian leaders not to drag it into their electoral politics, saying allegations of meddling in the Gujarat Assembly elections are “baseless and irresponsible.
“India should stop dragging Pakistan into its electoral debate and win victories on own strength rather than fabricated conspiracies, which are utterly baseless and irresponsible,” Pakistan’s Foreign Office Spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal tweeted.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said on Sunday that Pakistan was interfering in the Gujarat Assembly elections, and asked the Congress to come clean on reports of its top functionaries recently meeting leaders from the neighbouring country.
The PM also raised questions over a reported appeal by former director general of the Pakistan Army, Sardar Arshad Rafiq, that Congress leader Ahmed Patel be made Gujarat’s chief minister in case the Congress wins the elections.
