City students get 45k households to switch off power for an hour
In an attempt to spread awareness about energy conservation, 17 schools and their students were instrumental in saving over 13,000 units of energy by motivating entire neighbourhoods to shut down electricity for an hour.
The schools, which have come together under the banner of ‘The Green Principals and Educators League’, planned to take their efforts beyond a one-day exercise by encouraging students to contribute to the cause. Students were asked to undertake projects on energy conservation to obtain marks in their second term.
Under the project, it was decided that the students will shut electricity for an hour on December 11 at their residences and encourage at least five neighbours, friends or relatives to do the same. Interestingly, the students were able to motivate 45,000 households and save nearly 13,600 units.
Speaking about the initiative, Renu Seth, a founding member of the initiative, said, “The results are great as the students and schools have really worked very hard. Students were able to motivate 45,000 households and we could save electricity worth Rs 80,000. This was a small step but if all schools join a similar initiative, we will be able to spread a lot of awareness and save energy.”
