‘I, Tonya’ star Margot Robbie says women don’t get lead roles easily
Actor Margot Robbie was “hesitant” to take up the role of Tonya Harding in I, Tonya” as she feared that if she fails she will not get another opportunity to play a film’s lead again.
In an interview with The Guardian, the Oscar-nominated actor said she phoned her mother when she received the film’s proposal and told her, “Mum, I’m the main part.” “It’s a big step, playing a lead, a step I’ve been hesitant to make. All the weight of the film rests on your shoulders. And if it doesn’t work? It’s that much harder for you to get a lead role again especially if you’re a woman,” Robbie said.
“I feel like guys get a few more chances to be the lead in a flop. If you’re a woman, and it flops? Good luck getting another one,” she added.
Robbie has her own production company named LuckyChap Entertainment that produced I, Tonya.
Robbie has picked up nominations in Best Actress category in every award that have been announced so far. But so far has failed to convert that opportunity into a win.
Nevertheless, she now rubs shoulders with the likes of Meryl Streep and Frances McDormand in that category.
