Shankaracharya of Kanchi Jayendra Saraswathi’s last rites begin; thousands arrive to pay homage
The last rites for the Shankarayacharya of Kanchi, Jayendra Saraswathi, were conducted on Thursday, the temple trust said in a statement.
The Hindu seer, who had a large following globally, died of a cardiac arrest on Wednesday. He was 82.
More than 1 lakh people have taken his darshan since yesterday. At 8 am,we will start the rituals.Obituary will be done at this place only, so public can see.He will be decorated & his body will be taken to the place he has to be kept, Sundareshan, Manager of Kanchi Sankara Mutt.
The 82-year old head of the Kanchi Mutt was suffering from diabetes and had collapsed at the mutt with shortness of breath and was admitted to Chennai’s Ramachandra hospital last month.
The last rites, known as the ‘Brindavana Pravesha Karyakramam’ in Vedic context, are expected to go on until noon today, news agency ANI stated.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the demise of Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati.
