PM Modi mocks Congress leadership, dubs Captain Amarinder Singh an ‘independent soldier’
On Saturday, delivering a victory speech after the BJP and its allies won 45 seats in Tripura and did reasonably well in Nagaland and Meghalaya, PM Modi stated that Congress Chief Ministers are becoming rare. However, he appeared to forgo the hostilities for Punjab CM Amarinder Singh, with whom he shares a good rapport.
Speaking about Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh, he claimed that the Congress hierarchy doesn’t consider him as one of their own and vice versa. Going on to praise Amarinder Singh, he called him a ‘swatantra fauji’, an independent soldier.
He said: “In Punjab, the Congress does not even consider their CM as their own. He marches on, like an independent solider.”
That the Punjab CM and the Centre share a strong affinity was evident during Canadian PM’s visit when the Centre appeared to give a cold shoulder to the visiting head of state after Trudeau reportedly refused to meet Captain Amarinder Singh. It was only after Trudeau met Amarinder, did PM Modi soften their stance.
