Neil Nitin Mukesh on working in ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ and pressure of family legacy

Neil Nitin Mukesh says passion for what you love to do as a creative person has no limitation.

As he walked the ramp and removed the drape of finest fabric as the show stopper for Rajesh Pratap Singh at The Woolmark and Raymond fashion show, the taut physique Neil Nitin Mukesh called it a revelation of the legacy that the brand holds.

Though, juggling with a busy schedule for two films and his new venture of production has kept him busy these days, Neil Nitin Mukesh says passion for what you love to do as a creative person has no limitation and that drives him as an individual when it comes to film making and cinema as a creative medium.

In a candid chat with IndianExpress.com, he talked about creativity, censorship and multitasking nature of artists of his generation.

Creativity
I think when it comes to actors’ people become too judgmental and start defining creativity. But for me, before being an actor, I am a human who loves creativity and creativity has no boundary. For me creativity is an expression, which is as beautiful as life. Whatever I do, I try to feel it and then express myself according to that. As even for fashion shows, when I walk as a showstopper, it is not just about walking in the garment, but trying to feel the brand legacy and then walk with it to take it forward. Apart from this, I feel if I am an actor that does not mean I cannot try my hands in different sections of filmmaking. Till the time it interests me and I have enough knowledge, I can jump into any section of art and make best of it for myself.

Future File
This year I am doing two major projects expected to release in the months of October and November. The first one is ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’, where I am playing the second lead with Salman Khan as the protagonist. I feel this is going to be a major project of my acting career, as I am working with some finest people of the industry that includes Salman Khan and Sooraj Barjatya. The character I am playing is very complex and he is rebellious with a cause. And I think people will like the character as it has been woven for a purpose in the film and Sooraj is known for characters.

Legacy Pressure
I feel lucky enough to be born in a family that has been serving Indian cinema for three generations now. Everyday, I tell myself that I am not just an individual, but someone who has Nitin and Mukesh in his name, and every action of mine has an impact on it. So, of course, I feel the pressure of belonging to such family but at the same time it gives me honour too.

Final Cut
Personally, I feel that discretion is on certificate and once it is on certificate then the screen material needs to be judged. But at the same time I feel that judgment should not ruin the soul of the film. Content needs to be monitored but depiction of the character and message should not be altered in a way that the film loses its motive. The sudden debate is because people in authority have become little strict not just about the sex content but also about the violence and it has become difficult for filmmakers to take the call.

Multi-Tasking
What actors of my generation are doing is the real essence of being creative in life, where you try what you feel you can and walk that extra mile to satisfy your soul. I too have started pushing myself with what I believe I am worth of. I have turned producer and have started a joint venture with Miraj production. The idea is to take the entertainment sector ahead. For now, the chairman, Madan Paliwal and I are reading scripts and directors are being booked. The motive is to pool in good filmmakers and end up with genuine art of filmmaking.
