Explained: 2015 World Cup’s likely quarter-finalists

The first leg of the World Cup saw some expected results, thrilling contests and upsets. Most teams have secured their spots with convincing runs while others have just managed to hang on to stay in the contention. A look at the points table doesn’t really reveal who plays who in the quarters. A quick look at the likely contests:
New Zealand have topped their group courtesy some comprehensive wins in the group stages. With five fins under their belt, and a possible sixth against Bangladesh, the Kiwis are likely to play either the loser of Ireland v Pakistan or the West Indies. Whatever it is, the quarters appear to be an easy hurdle for the Black Caps.
Australia’s campaign took a little hit when they lost a thriller to New Zealand in the group stages. By not ending the group stage on top, the Aussies have opened up three possibilities for the quarters. They will either play the winner of Ireland vs Pakistan or South Africa (only if South Africa lose to UAE. Which is unlikely) or West Indies – this will happen if Ireland beat Pakistan.
India are sitting pretty on top of their group. Five wins on the trot and the Men in Blue are likely to run into Bangladesh for the quarters. It is more or less certain because the expected outcomes of Bangladesh- New Zealand (Bangladesh expected to lose) and Sri Lanka-Scotland (Scotland expected to lose) will seal the neighbours clash.
Pakistan’s win over South Africa has made their road to quarters a rather smooth one. If they manage to beat Ireland in their next group contest they will be through, but even a loss won’t affect the campaign much as West Indies would then need to beat UAE by a huge margin to sneak ahead on run-rate. If Pakistan manage to finish third, they will play Australia, while the team finishing fourth will clash with New Zealand.
Sri Lanka are most likely to run into South Africa in the quarters. The scenario will change if the Lions lose to Scotland.
