IAS officer death: Govt ‘ready’ to call in CBI if Karnataka asks

The Centre on Thursday said it is ready for a CBI probe into the death of Karnataka IAS officer D K Ravi as soon as the state government recommends it.

In Karnataka, however, the government made it clear it would not ask for a CBI probe. Home Minister K J George said after a cabinet meeting, “Whatever decision we have taken on the floor of the House (assembly), that is the decision and we will stick to it.”

In the Lok Sabha, the issue was raised during zero hour by Prahlad Joshi (BJP) who said the state government had not accepted the demands of the parents of the 35-year-old officer to recommend a CBI probe. A heated exchange took place between the Congress and BJP MPs on this.

“I have spoken to the Karnataka chief minister who has told me that after he receives a few more details, he will give a detailed report. If the state government recommends a CBI probe, the Centre will immediately order an inquiry,” Home Minister Rajnath Singh said.

The House earlier witnessed arguments over law and order in states like Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. The House had to be adjourned for 15 minutes at 12:30 amid the din created by Left MPs who wanted to raise the issue of police brutality during an SFI march in Himachal Pradesh. As Speaker Sumitra Mahajan rejected their demand to suspend question hour, Left members rushed to the well demanding they be allowed to speak.

K Suresh of the Congress brought up an alleged attack on a Dalit man in Tamil Nadu, which was immediately opposed by AIADMK members. An exchange also took place between BJP leader S S Ahluwalia and TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee after the former raised the issue of the rape of a 71-year-old “sadhvi” in West Bengal.
