300 evacuated from low-lying areas
Due to rain in areas upstream of the Sabarmati river, excess water was released from Dharoi dam. A total of 1.16 lakh cusecs were released and all 26 gates Vasna barrage were opened up.
With AMC issuing an alert on Monday for residents of low-lying areas, 300 people were been evacuated. A total of 600 people staying near Chandrabhaga and Parikshitlal Nagar were moved to safer places.
Entry banned at riverfront
With the Sabarmati flowing at 133 feet, compared to the usual level of 127 feet that is usually maintained, the AMC issued continuous warnings to people living in low-lying areas to stay away. With the river in spate, the lower promenade of the Riverfront was completely submerged. “For safety measures, we have deployed police and barricaded the Riverfront. We are expecting water levels to decrease from tomorrow,” said municipal commissioner Mukesh Kumar.
He said they had closed one underpass at the Riverfront as the water level was high there.
