Amit Shah to inaugurate steel ‘charkha’ at CP on Sunday
The long-awaited larger-than-life charkha in Connaught Place’s Central Park is all set to be thrown open to the public this Sunday. The ruling-BJP chief Amit Shah is likely to inaugurate the 13-foot high steel charkha located along with the national flag near Pallika Bazaar.
The charkha was installed by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Centre’s Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) last year.
“We were planning to inaugurate the Charkha on Friday itself but we postponed the event owing to union environment minister Anil Madhav Dave’s passing away,” said a senior NDMC official.
Weighing five tonnes and located in the heart of the city, the charkha is meant to bring people closer to the idea of preserving national heritage.
The KVIC had also installed the world’s biggest wooden charkha at the IGI Terminal -III.
“The charkha made of stainless steel in the capital’s centre is also meant to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi. The installation would help sensitise people towards the freedom struggle and the legends associated with it,” the official said.
The charkha also has a silk khadi thread attached to it for which artists from Ahmedabad had come down to the capital.
